The Weekly Tri

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here we are.  The end of the year.  The end of college.  The beginning of summer.  The beginning of a new era for this team.  It has been more than a pleasure to publish this every week.  I have had so much fun coming up with ridiculous things and I’ve loved the feedback that I’ve gotten from this little missive.  So, without further ado, my last TWT.

THE WEEK THAT WAS

-This weed has been a blur.  We dined.  We celebrated.  We sent some people off the right way.  We welcomed the new exec board and yanked the old one.

-The volunteer day at World Bicycle Relief was a major success.  We completely reorganized their space, got the grand tour of the SRAM executive offices, got some free pizza, and began what I think will be a really positive relationship with them.  If you weren’t able to come or want to know more about how to get involved with them, talk to Kendyl or Anna.

THE WEEK TO BE

-Ironman Kansas (Lawrence, KS): Sunday morning, Rich Barbera will be going up against the big guns in this 70.3 event.  That’s right, Rich will be competing against the likes of Chrissie Wellington and Andy Potts.  That’s a big deal to even be on the same course on the same day with those people.

-Elkhart Lake Triathlon (Elkhart Lake, WI): I’m celebrating being done with college by going all out at the USAT Midwestern Regional Championships.  Supposed to be rainy and 60 degrees.  Yippee.  Can’t we get some nice, medium weather?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

-If you have new announcements going forward, talk to Rich.  He’s the one who now gets to write this little email now.

-I hate to do this right here and ruin the mood, but I’ve got something on my heart that I need to say to you guys.  Last weekend while running the 13.1 half marathon here in Chicago, one of my very good friends, Zach, died.  You may have heard about it in the news, but he was 26, in EXCELLENT condition (he was realistically shooting for a sub 1:40 time, and a veteran of mulitple marathons), and the LAST guy you’d expect to have trouble with the heat.  It was really hot, but the autopsy was inconclusive and no one really knows the cause of death, but it has hit me really hard.

I’ll get to the point: guys, I love you all.  If I can stand on my soap box one last time (as Dad of the team): the role of a teammate and leader is to pick people up when they’re feeling down and celebrate with them when they’re at their best.  I would do anything for any of you, and I know that you would do the same.  PLEASE be safe out there.  We love this sport, we love to push ourselves, we love to get at each other and compete, but NOTHING, NOTHING is more important than your safety.  Wear Road ID’s and helmets, make sure you’re well-hydrated, tell people where you’re going or go with someone, TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES AND EACH OTHER.  Life is too short to take anything or anyone for granted, so go celebrate every single day that you have with the people and teammates that you love.

I will miss you all, but I know that I’m leaving at the peak of this team’s potential and I could not be MORE EXCITED about where this team is going and where it can go.  I wish you all the best this summer and beyond in triathlon and in life.  Live life to the fullest and KICK SOME PURDUE ASS!!!! (I actually just met Anna’s twin sister who goes there the other day, lovely girl.  If all the folks at Purdue are as nice as she is, it’s actually probably not half bad).

SHOUT OUT OF THE WEEK

YOU, MY TEAMMATES, FRIENDS, AND COMRADES.  THANKS FOR LISTENING.

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here we are.  Reading week.  The almost last week of the school year.  The almost last week of college for some of us.  These are things to be both celebrated and a little wary of.  But I come to you with good tidings of great joy: it is finally sunny and warm.  As it seems, Chicago has completely skipped over spring, instead giving us many months of rainy and cold winter followed by a sudden snap into summer.

THE WEEK THAT WAS

-Dillo Day was really fun guys.  Thanks to AKrush for hosting!!

THE WEEK TO BE

SHOUT OUT OF THE WEEK

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I promise that at some point, May will arrive.  I promise.  I don’t know when, it might not be until July…but someday my prince will come.  Guys!  There were races last weekend.  In the effing cold wet miserable mess.  WOO HOO!

THE WEEK THAT WAS

-YL 5k (Evanston, IL): I ran this on Saturday morning.  PR!  3rd in my age group and 11th overall in a time of 21:10.

-Chicago Spring Half Marathon and 10k (Chicago, IL): Let me set the scene. It was raining, 25 mph winds with gusts up to 37 mph, the ENTIRE course was on the water and it was 45 degrees out. We all almost died. It was so windy my pace dropped by 40 secs on the way back in. Brutality

Anna placed 37 in our age group with a time of 1:57:27 (8:58 pace)

Andrea (me) placed 56 in our age group with a time of 2:00:27 (9:12 pace)

Lynne placed 23 in her age group with a time of 2:18:13 (10:34 pace)

Brad ran the 10k. Placed 6th overall and 2nd in his age group with a time of 38:36 (6:13 pace)

-Tower Triathlon (Niles, IL): Dave Bierschenk, Heather Lucas, and Carl Herndon raced this one.  It wasn’t even a triathlon.  Due to high winds, rain, wet roads, and cold temperatures, the bike was cancelled.  So we had a nice little swim-run (aquathlon?).  Big results too

Heather had a great race, but didn’t get any results because they didn’t get her results.  I don’t know

Carl won 2nd in his age group and 23rd overall.

Dave won 2nd in his age group and 12th overall.

THE WEEK TO BE

-Memphis in May this weekend.  There’s like 20+ people going.  GET EXCITED!

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!!!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlmen,

IT’S SUNNY OUTSIDE.  Even if it’s only for this morning before the thunderstorms roll in this afternoon, there is a big ball of fire shining down on us from billions of miles away today.  Be excited about that.  I ran without a shirt on yesterday.  People were excited about that.

THE WEEK THAT WAS:

-Erin Boutwell competed in the Smith Mountain Lake Sprint Tri (Smith Mt. Lake, VA) over the weekend.  Time of 1:36:05.  According to sources, this means that she dropped nearly 5 minutes on her time just since nationals.  THIS IS AWESOME!

-The Cinco de Miler saw several peoples race especially fastly.

Aaron Blumenthal: 8:25 pace

Kendyl: 8:52 pace

Mitch: 6:16 pace.  2nd in his age group (lost by 3 seconds), and 22nd overall.

THE WEEK TO BE:

-Tower Tri: myself, Heather, Dave, and the entire Minor family will be competing out in Niles on Sunday morning.  Waves start at 7:00.  It’s only 20 minutes away, so if you want to come cheer, COME.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-On Saturday, if you’re looking for a good competitive 5k to race in, there’s one on campus.  It benefits an organization that I’ve been a part of since I was in 8th grade and means a lot to me.  It’s called Young Life.  Sign up at signmeup.com/74847 or go to the YL website at northshore.younglife.org.  I know people have races and all that other stuff on their plates, but it would be really cool if some of you came out to run.  I’ll definitely be there.

-Be on the lookout for [Important] emails from exec about some events next week.  We have a nutritionist, the last open exec meeting before ELECTIONS, and other things.

-Kelli Marks started fundraising for her Bike and Build trip this summer.  Talk to her or check facebook if you want to donate.

-NU Tri will be doing a philanthropy event on 6/4/11.  SET THIS DATE ASIDE PLEASE.  We’ll be helping out an organization called World Bike Relief that does some really amazing things.  Stay tuned for more info as I get it worked out.

I want to sincerely welcome you to another edition of the weekly tri.  This rag is really what it’s all about (with the obvious exception of the hokey pokey).  Guys, senioritis is difficult to overcome.  I have no desire to go to school at all anymore.  I really don’t want to.  Only 3 weeks left of class though….suck it up cupcake.

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This.  Is.  The.  Weekly.  Tri.  Good morning! It looks like today is going to be the first day this week where I don’t have to wear my winter coat.  I’ve been noticing that people are getting sick here and there, a little cough here, a little mucus there.  I wish all of us a speedy recovery.  Spring will have sprung soon enough and all the chills, ills, and cheap electric bills of winter will be in the rearview mirror.

THE WEEK THAT WAS:

-Practice resumed after Nationals and so did school.  Happy Passover for those who are celebrating it!

THE WEEK TO BE:

-Happy Easter on Sunday!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-So far, the only people that I know of that are coming to Tower Tri are: myself, Aaron, and the entire Minor family.  THAT’S RIGHT.  If you want to major in the Minors, come to Niles with us on 5/15.  Once again, this race is PERFECT for beginners.  Email me once you’ve registered please so I can start organizing everything.

-Starting next week on Friday (4/29), the 80th annual Waa Mu Show: “What’s Next?” opens!  If you’ve always wondered why it is that theatre majors go to all that rehearsal, and/or wanted to see a big-ticket show at NU, here’s your chance.  I’m in it and play the frat star (I may or may not do push-ups on stage).  If you have no idea what Waa Mu is, it’s an entirely student-written musical comedy that plays on different things encountered here at NU.  It’s also my last show ever, so that’s a big deal.  The show runs 4/29-5/8 on Th, Fri, Sat nights with matinees on Sat and Sun afternoons.  Tickets can be bought attic.northwestern.edu/waamu

-Even though Joseph Edmund blatantly disregarded the listserv rule with his call for dream homes yesterday….I will include it again here.  His ice cream shop is trying to win “Best Ice Cream Shop in Warren County”.  It’s in Iowa.  Go here:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2011WarrenCounty to vote for him (scroll down to #23 and enter “The Outside Scoop”).

SHOUT OUT OF THE WEEK

COACH BRETT.

HE CAME TO ALABAMA, HE GIVES US GREAT TRAINING PLANS, NEVER TAKES ENOUGH CREDIT.

ADDENDUM TO THE WEEKLY TRI:

It has just been brought to my attention that last week was was the Rockdale Ramblin’ Run (touted by many as “the toughest 10k in the midwest”).  Young Sherman, Vickie, Kendyl, Val, Naomi, Paula, and Leah all volunteered and cheered on AKrush and Anna as they ran.

Results:

Anna Bisaro = 53:35 (1st in the female 15-19 age group)

AKrush = 57:29 (3rd in the female 20-24 age group)

BOTH ARE PR’S AND PODIUM FINISHES!!!!!!!!  High Fives All Around!

The Weekly Tri

THE WEEKLY TRI!!!!!!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I come to you from the Tech library this morning with a warm heart full of warmth.  This team is really one of the greatest organizations I’ve ever been a part of and that was so apparent this weekend in Tuscaloosa.  I want to personally thank all of you that came down and made the trip such a success.  If you’re longing to go back and live in a little bubble of triathlon world, you’re not alone.  Let’s do this more often!

THE WEEK THAT WAS:

-USAT Collegiate Nationals (Tuscaloosa, AL): with 21 people racing in both events, we had our biggest team ever to go to Nationals.  It was hotter than Hades down there, but undeterred, we raced with all we had.  Several PR’s.  Mitch was top 100 in the male race.  Peter Craig was top 25 in the sprint race.  Nev liked the smell.  Kendyl peed on the run.  If you are one of the people who didn’t go, we sincerely hope you can come next year, this is really the epitome of races/road trips and I couldn’t be more proud of how it went.  If you’re looking for results, usatriathlon.org has them all, plus more.

THE WEEK TO COME:

-Get back to work!!!  The season just started and I want to go faster.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

-CBS Sports Network will debut separate one-hour telecasts on Friday, April 29 with the women’s event airing at 10 p.m. ET, followed by the men’s event at 11 p.m. ET.  THIS WILL BE A SOCIAL EVENT.  OR ELSE.  But we need to find somewhere that has CBS Sport Network (this is not the regular CBS channel).  If you are one of those people that has expanded cable in your apartment or house….EMAIL ME ASAP.

-The Tower Tri:  This is a VERY EASY sprint race in Niles, IL (only 20 minutes away) at the YMCA there on 5/15.  Registration is unfortunately closed at this time though.  If you are doing this race, email me so we can organize who’s going.

-Memphis in May is coming up!  5/21-5/22.  Be on the lookout for emails from exec for that trip.  If you’re still thinking about it, email Rich or Mitch and they’ll convince you.  I have to stand in a wedding in S. Carolina that weekend, so I can’t come.

-The NUTri team is going to be doing a philanthropy event in partnership with World Bicycle Relief.  I’m still ironing out the details, but keep on the lookout for emails about that.

SHOUT OUT OF THE WEEK:

THE NUTRI NATIONALS TEAM.

don’t wait for daylight, don’t run from tonight,
